(Description) Light bump to corner from shipping, esle new and unread! ***(Synopsis) Howells was an intensely private individual, and he valued his privacy most highly during his fishing sojourns. He once wrote, I hide in the bushes so my customers can't find me Howells was also very secretive about his building techniques; but, with a limited group of rod builders, he willingly shared ideas. Beelart Jr. has tapped into archives, private letters, and unpublished material to craft a moving portrait of a true American artist. Weve always had Howells rods; now we have the story behind the rods. Howells left us five logbooks, 2,000 letters, 1,000 photographs, as well as boxes of shop receipts, cancelled checks and the like. He was a man who devoted his life to all aspects of the sport of fly fishing. But the personal price he paid for pursuing his love of fly fishing was heavy and his time with us was short. No longer able to fish, less than three years after stepping from his shop, he died, alone, AB01229.

The Lew Stoner Ted Trueblood Letters, Stoner, Lew; Joe Beelart (Editor)
11 Stoner, Lew; Joe Beelart (Editor)The Lew Stoner Ted Trueblood Letters; 1936702762 / 9781936702763, New Book
2014 The Whitefish Press; Limited Edition
As New 8vo Hardcover, No Jacket, as issued
(Description) One of a Limited Edition of 125 Numbered copies. 7 x 5, small 8vo desktop sized. ***(Synopsis) This is Volume II of the Lew Stoner letters. It is built on twenty letters between Stoner and Ted Trueblood, a well-published, mid-20th century outdoor writer. In it, the reader will find how Stoner came to terms with a new technology that in only ten years radically changed the fishing rod manufacturing business. Readers will find their discussions a major departure from the topics in Volume I, The Lew Stoner Winston Letters (Whitefish Press, 2013) which showed other facets of Stoner as a small businessman. Volume I provides insights into how Stoner ran his business; specifically in relation to customer service, communicating complex ideas clearly and concisely in writing, and how to work with dealers as well as customers while upholding the reputation and integrity of the Winston Rod Company. Volume II witnesses a small businessman addressing the effects of technological change on his business. Together these two volumes address basic issues confronting virtually every company, then and now., AB01310.

2012 The Whitefish Press; Limited Edition
As New 8vo Hardcover, No Jacket, as issued
(Description) One of a Limited Edition of 125 Numbered copies. 7 x 5, small 8vo desktop sized. ***(Synopsis) For the first time ever, noted bamboo rod historian Joe Beelart brings us a compilation of letters from Lew Stoner. Dating from 1940 to the mid-1950s, these letters give us tremendous insight into the mind of a rodmaking genius. They cover topics ranging from surf casting to fly fishing to rodmaking, with tangents into everything from tournament casting to steelhead fishing. In addition to the letters, there are four appendices: the first containing letters to the editor Stoner wrote to the Oakland Tribune; the second reprinting A.J. McClane's take on Stoner and Winston rods; a third reproducing an early history of Winston by Fred Maly; and a final one containing the text of a detailed article on Marvin Hedge and Lew Stoner from the 1930s. The entire book is richly footnoted by Joe Beelart to help modern readers place the many names and places - ranging from Polly Rosborough to Jason Lucas to Ted Trueblood - into historical context. For anyone interested in Winston history, this is a must read. To anyone who loves West Coast fishing and rod history, it is equally indispensable. And of course, if you love bamboo fly rods and their history and lore, you will not want to miss this book., AB01161.
