(Synopsis) The people, places, tackle, techniques, flies, literature, fly shops, photography, and lore of western fly fishing during the late nineteenth and twentieth century. History of shooting heads, weighted flies, woven flies, the double haul, spliced lines, stripping baskets, and more Northwest fly-fishing innovations. Development of unique fly styles west of the Rocky Mountains: Bailey's mossbacks; Pott's woven-bodied mites; Rosborough's fuzzy nymphs; and Pray's optics; among numerous others. The inventions, achievements, traditions, and lore of western fly fishing are explored in this unique book, which examines the contributions of twenty-three pioneers and legends from British Columbia, California, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, and Washington: Dan Bailey, Ted Trueblood, Zane Grey, Polly Rosborough, and Roderick Haig-Brown, as well as some not so well known like Harry Hornbrook, Mooch Abraham, and Ralph Olson. Written in an engaging style with original photographs and fly plates, the book documents the development of new and effective fly patterns, fishing methods, techniques, and tackle, all necessary for the unequaled western waters and their novel fish--five species of Pacific salmon, Kamloops trout, steelhead, and sea-run cutthroat trout., C0155.

Gentlemen Preferred Dry Flies, Black, William C.
5 Black, William C.Gentlemen Preferred Dry Flies; 0826347959 / 9780826347954, New Book
2010 Univ. of New Mexico Press; 1st Ed, 1st PrintingSigned by the Author
Near Fine 8vo Softcover,
(Description) Brand new unread, clean and tight. *** (Synopsis) There is evidence that men have been fooling fish with fake flies for over 700 years, possibly much longer, going back to China and Macedonia and Rome. The first fly-fishing book, written in the early years of the fifteenth century but not published until 1496, was for many years attributed to Dame Juliana Berners, an English nun born some years before that. Subsequent evidence shows that she may not have been the author of the Treatise of Fishing with an Angle. The true author is unknown, but the dictates of the book have lived on ever since in the ever-present activity of fly-fishing's devotees. Black gathers the stories of numerous historical characters, many of them English aristocrats, who have adhered to the traditional requirement that flies should be modeled on the flying insects that land on the water's surface, rather than nymphs, the immature form of the floating insect. Gentlemen only fished for rising fish lured by a fleeting food source. While both techniques are now equally fascinating to gentlemen (and ladies), the debate between those who prefer dry flies to wet continues to this day., AB00886.

2016 The Whitefish Press; Ltd. Ed. Of 100 copiesSigned by the Author
Near Fine 8vo Hardcover, in Near Fine DJ
(Description) Limited Edition of 100 copies, signed and numbered by the author on a bookplate inside front cover. ***(Synopsis) In this retrospective on women and fly tying author Erin Block uncovers a largely hidden side of fly fishing history. From the heart of the nineteenth century to the present, the work of fifteen famous fly tiers are outlined in this seminal work. From Carrie Frost, who built an empire on the Mississippi River, to Carrie Stevens, who built a legend in Maine, some of the most important names in fly angling are covered in detail. Portraits of famed commercial tiers like Elizabeth Greig, Winnie Dette, Mary Dette Clark (pictured above), Elsie Darbee, Helen Shaw, Megan Boyd, and Frances Stearns are included, along with modern tiers Cathy Beck, Sharon E. Wright, and April Vokey. And historical figures, from Dame Juliana Berners to the mysterious Elizabeth Benjamin to the legendary Mary Orvis Marbury get their just due. Block also solves one of the enduring mysteries in American fly fishing history — what ever happened to Sara Jane McBride, the famed fly tier who was also America’s first entomological fly angler? The book is illustrated throughout and includes a bonus chapter on the modern women tiers whose beautiful work is available in most fly shops and who continue a tradition of nearly two centuries of anonymously crafting quality flies., AB01468.

It is a shrewd and practical study of the ecology of the river - its varied voices, the insects that inhabit its riffles and pools, the rainbow and brown trout that live in its waters. It is a complete portrait - moving and frank - that starts with origins and influences, explores realities and threats, and with sharp detail outlines modern opportunities., U01493.

(Description) One set of the 3 Limited Edition set of 100 copies (matching numbered) signed and numbered by the Author on publisher's bookplates. This listing is for all three books together and will not be split up. ***Synopsis - The Chronological History of Penn Reels, 1932-1957) One of the greatest success stories in the history of fishing tackle is the Penn Fishing Tackle Manufacturing Co. of Philadelphia, Penn. Founded by Otto Henze in the teeth of the great depression, Henze revolutionized the field of saltwater angling, making the sport affordable for the working man by creating brilliantly simple and rugged fishing reels that would stand up to generations of use. Here, for the first time ever, Penn reel historian and collector Michael Cacioppo takes you through the history of Penn year by year, from its founding in 1932 through its 25th anniversary year of 1957. ***Synopsis - The Penn Reel Collector's Companion and Price Guide (ISBN:9781936702886) A companion volume to Mike Cacioppo’s The Chronological History of Penn Reels, 1932-1957 — considered by many to be “The Blue Book” for Penn reel collectors — this book brings together a veritable treasure of Penn reel information that did not fit the parameters of the first book. In addition, The Collector’s Companion includes a detailed Price Guide to all Penn reels sold by the firm in the first 25 years of its existence. The essays include detailed information on the Penn Prototype Models F and K, the earliest days of Penn reels, the Penn Sea Hawk, the Sea Ford, the Bay Side, the Long Beach, Quick Take-Apart Penns, the indomitable Squidder, the legendary Senators, Penn trade reels, left-handed Penns, color variations of Penn reels, South African exports, light tackle Penn casting reels in the pre-war era, Penn Anniversary reels, the Penn formula, and hot rod Penns of alantani.com. The Price Guide includes individual listing of every model Penn offered year-by-year from 1932 through 1957, with prices included for every known reel. Based on the author’s experience with buying and selling thousands of Penn reels, as well as closely following the Penn reel market for over a decade, the prices will help collectors and resellers alike better ascertain the value of their vintage Penn reel. ***Synopsis for A Documentary History of Penn Reels, 1932 - 1957 (ISBN: 9781945565014) This companion volume to The Chronological History of Penn Reels, 1932-1957 and The Penn Reel Collector’s Companion & Price Guide, 1932-1957, the long-awaited A Documentary History of Penn Reels, 1932-1957 contains rare documents and photographs pertaining to Penn history during its first 25 years. It is divided into three sections: Section One, which covers original documents and letters to and from Penn and photos from Penn’s first ledger book; Section Two, which contains a complete set of Penn catalogs from this period; and Section Three, a photographic essay of Penn during this era. A must for any Penn collector! Here, for the first time ever, is a complete set of Penn Fishing Tackle Manufacturing Co. catalogs and other documents and photos pertaining to its first 25 years of history. From the unnumbered Penn flyer for the Model K, to Catalog #1 in 1933 through Catalog #20 in 1957, this volume reproduces every page of every Penn catalog during the years 1932-1957, including rare pocket catalogs. It also includes everything from correspondence between Otto Henze and other tackle makers, to images of the first sales ledgers, to photos of the factory floor. This work will serve as a standard reference for many years, as well as a great companion to the previous two Penn histories in this series. A must for any Penn reel collector, dealer, or historian!, AB01309.
